Why is Buying Clothes So Complicated?

Why is Buying Clothes So Complicated?

I’m a fashion enthusiast, but finding the affordable clothing that matches my expectation is so challenging. For the most of the time, I shop online due to the convenience, but it’s difficult to visualize how items will look on myself, leading to unrealistic expectations. For physical stores, the variety is often limited, and shopping in person can be time-consuming and expensive.

From Insight to Innovation

In this project, I took on the role of a product designer, starting from identifying a problem. I conducted user research to deeply understand the target audience. Using these insights, I developed and refined a solution, resulting in a user-centered product that effectively address the identified needs.

Limited variety, time, and money commitments make many users prefer online shopping over visiting physical stores.

However, online stores often lack diverse body representation, making it hard for users to visualize fit, leading to ill-fitting or unsatisfactory purchases.

It's very important for me to see photos products on diverse models, because most sellers' models choose the smallest sizes that always look good on them, but not on me.

IDEATION & FRAMEWORK

Bridging the Gap: Real Fit, Real Feedback, Real Value

Bridging the Gap: Real Fit, Real Feedback, Real Value

Drawing from the challenges of size, price, and inspiration in online shopping, I began exploring solutions. Virtual fitting rooms and AI recommendations tackle fit but remain inaccessible to many. Discount platforms address affordability but lack personalization. Styling tips and professional advice provide guidance but fall short on interactivity.

  1. Real Representation:

Users share outfit photos with size, brand, and measurements, addressing the lack of diverse visuals.

  2. Affordability & Sustainability:

A second-hand marketplace lets users exchange or sell clothes that don’t fit.

  3. Interactive Inspiration:

Peer-driven feedback and styling advice foster engagement, making it relatable and budget-friendly.

Key insights learned from the test:

Key insights learned from the test:

Feature 1: Online Fashion Community

  1. Users showed strong interest in the online fashion community, recognizing its potential to help them find suitable clothing by referencing individuals with similar body types.

  2. However, concerns about privacy related to sharing body measurements emerged. Besides, the feature's success depends on a large, active user base sharing high-quality content, ensuring users can find relatable examples and maintain engagement.

Feature 2: Second-hand Market

The test revealed low familiarity and engagement with second-hand purchases. Users typically keep or give away unfit clothes rather than reselling them. Additionally, incorporating a marketplace risked insincere content, such as self-promotion, which conflicted with user expectations.

The solution crafted in the project is definitely not perfect, especially with concerns and risks identified. But this design has the potential to transform the online shopping experience by bridging the gap between static product images and real-life styling examples.

The solution crafted in the project is definitely not perfect, especially with concerns and risks identified. But this design has the potential to transform the online shopping experience by bridging the gap between static product images and real-life styling examples.

To minimize risks, I crafted next steps:

  1. Address Privacy Concerns:

Conduct user interviews or surveys to understand the specific privacy concerns users have about sharing photos and body measurements.

  2. Encourage User Engagement and Content Creation:

Develop a strategy to build a large, active user base by incentivizing content creation. For example, introduce gamification (badges, rewards) or spotlight popular contributors.

  3. Validate Content Quality and Relevance:

Explore diverse ways of post display. Regularly collect user feedback on the usefulness of posts.

  4. Iterate on the Product Vision:

Consider refining the app's positioning to emphasize its role as a reference tool for online clothing shopping, since it is not a solution to the fit dilemma as direct as solutions like AR fitting room.
